Second Empire [SEK-uhnd EM-pahyuh] n. a grand eclectic style of architecture in America
from about 1855 to 1890, used in many public buildings and elegant homes; named after the French Second Empire of Napoleon III (1852-1870).

It is frequently called Mansard Style becasue it is characterized by a mansard roof.
